Sul finire del '700, l'equipaggio del Bounty, sobillato dall'ufficiale in seconda Fletcher Christian (Gable), si ribella alla ferocia del capitano Bligh (Laughton), che viene abbandonato in mare su una scialuppa. Ma il capitano, raggiunta l'Inghilterra, si pone alla ricerca dei ribelli, ne cattura alcuni e li fa processare.

Greenwald, un avvocato scettico, difende a malincuore Maryk, un ufficiale della Marina che ha preso il controllo della nave dal suo dominante capitano Queeg mentre si trovava in una violenta tempesta marina. Greenwald diventa sempre più preoccupato man mano che la corte marziale procede e si chiede se quello del Caine sia stato un vero e proprio ammutinamento o semplicemente il gesto coraggioso di un gruppo di marinai che non si fidavano del loro instabile leader.

Saranno assolti, ma l'ufficiale difensore stesso dirà che Queeg vale in realtà molto più di loro.

It is the first known cinematic dramatization of this story and is considered a lost film. Longford claimed it was the first Australian film to shoot scenes at sea.
