Luglio, Houston. Un uomo sta annaffiando il giardino davanti a casa chiacchierando amabilmente con la vicina la quale si accorge che nelle pozzanghere c'è del sangue. Di lì a poco la polizia scoprirà nell'abitazione tre cadaveri di donne. L'uomo dice di avere avuto l'ordine da parte di Dio. Agosto, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Anne , un'assistente sociale riceve una confidenza da una donna sconvolta per la separazione dalla parte femminile della sua famiglia. A sera Anne si ritrova con sua madre Bella, sua figlia Amy e con il marito Alan che ha portato con sé il fratello Barney. I due parlano di un esperimento che hanno condotto su degli insetti e Bella, epidemiologa, li ammonisce sui rischi connessi ad esperimenti sulla Natura che vadano oltre i limiti. Di lì a poco riceve una telefonata e deve raggiungere la base militare di Jacksonville in Florida dove viene informata che è stato ucciso un migliaio di donne. È l'inizio della fine.
