La prospettiva di un importante salto di carriera, che le richiederebbe però di fare frequentemente la spola tra casa e New York, arriva (chiaramente) quando il marito si è da poco messo in proprio e cerca di farsi strada in tempi di crisi, quando la figlia maggiore comincia a lamentarsi dell'assenza materna e la suocera a farsi ostile. Ma Kate non può e non vuole rinunciare al nuovo contratto e prova a trasformarsi in una spericolata equilibrista.

Jack Kevorkian è un anziano medico di origine armena che, in un periodo che va approssimativamente dal 1990 al 1999, ha assistito nel suicidio più di 130 pazienti. Ne seguiamo l'azione a partire dal primo malato che, a causa delle ormai insostenibili sofferenze che gli procura la malattia, gli fa esplicita richiesta di morire. Kevorkian sostiene che chi è affetto da una patologia grave e incurabile e vuole lasciare questo mondo ha diritto di farlo. Per aggirare la legge del Michigan il medico ha realizzato e mette in atto, con la collaborazione di sua sorella e dell'amico Neal Nicol, una complessa strategia. Riprende le dichiarazioni dei pazienti (con a fianco i familiari) da cui emerga il loro esplicito e consapevole desiderio di non vivere più. Predispone quindi un'attrezzatura che il malato aziona personalmente. Ciò gli procura comunque numerose chiamate in giudizio da cui esce assolto.
