Quante volte ci interroghiamo sulla vita oltre la morte? Cinque studenti di medicina del Trinity Emmanuel Medical Center, nella speranza di trovare una risposta, si avventurano in un esperimento audace ma pericoloso. L'idea è dell'ambiziosa studentessa Courtney Hall che riunisce i suoi compagni in un laboratorio del seminterrato dell'università: ognuno di loro a turno si stende sul lettino lasciando che gli altri gli fermino il cuore. In quella breve ma angosciante esperienza di premorte, anche i più scettici assistono agli effetti del risveglio delle funzioni cerebrali oltre alle potenzialità della scoperta scientifica. Ma nessuno considera le controindicazioni. Al ritorno dal viaggio nell'aldilà, i ragazzi sono tormentati da tremende allucinazioni, immagini di un passato che lascia tracce nel presente, ricordi rimossi che ritornano a galla.
