Ming a marriage consultant who runs into the charming but blind Yeuk through a little help of a guardian angel. Quattro banditi, con la precisione cronometrica, assaltano la metropolitana di New York e si impadroniscono, dirottandolo, del vagone Pelham 123 con a bordo 17 passeggeri e un controllore. Per liberare gli ostaggi chiedono un milione di dollari altrimenti li uccideranno a uno a uno. Dell'operazione è incaricato il tenente Garber che, trasportando il denaro al vagone, intuisce le mosse dei banditi e li affronta sgominando la banda. Eccellente poliziesco dal crescendo drammatico esemplare. La suspense non cala quasi mai, e Matthau è bravo e riesce anche ad essere ironico (ad esempio nel finale).
