Nel 1794, Victor Frankenstein (Kenneth Branagh) viene recuperato sulla banchisa polare dal capitano Walton (Aidan Quinn) che lo fa portare a bordo della sua nave e ne ascolta il racconto. Frankenstein, dopo una serena infanzia nella natia Svizzera, aveva studiato a Ingolstadt e, stretto amicizia con Henry Clerval (Tom Hulce), si era dedicato alla realizzazione del suo sogno: creare un essere vivente. Riuscitoci, aveva dovuto prendere atto che il mostro (Robert De Niro) gli provocava solo orrore e perciò l’aveva ripudiato. Ma la creatura si era rivelata vendicativa.

Gary è un pilota di automobili da corsa che non può dimostrare le sue qualità perché non è iscritto ad una scuderia ufficiale e, a causa di motivi prettamente economici, non può comprare un'auto con elevate prestazioni. Per rimediare trama un piano ingegnoso insieme al suo meccanico di fiducia, Deke. Deke tiene in ostaggio la moglie e la figlia del ricco imprenditore George Stanton; nel mentre, Gary fa visita all'uomo per sottrargli dei soldi che userà per l'auto. I due delinquenti iniziano la loro delirante fuga. Sul cammino tuttavia avranno dei problemi con Mary, la ragazza di Gary, che è in libertà provvisoria. La polizia si metterà sulle loro tracce, guidata dal sinistro capitano Franklin. La fuga viene sfortunatamente interrotta a causa della distrazione di Gary, che non vedendo un locomotore di un treno in arrivo si va a schiantare contro di esso, generando un rogo dal quale nessuno uscirà vivo.

MARY is a short film co-devised by filmmakers four directors from Royal College of Art and GPT-2, an AI text generator deemed ‘too dangerous’ for full release to the public. When GPT-2 responds to a series of model prompts, it generates dramatically suggestive scenes that are rife with gender biases. But what also emerges is MARY, a character who wrestles GPT-2 for control of her story and the languages used to tell it. ‘Comic, bizarre and (at times) quietly terrifying,’ MARY aims to rewrite the dominant narratives produced by and around emerging technologies like AI.
