Is it possible, when you come from a family of Maghreb immigrants and you are a girl or a woman, to invent your life, to choose to leave the traditional universe, to break up with your family, without renouncing that which bases you, to the recognition of your own? Four portraits of women bear witness to a generation that lives its life through its own choices. Their mothers were illiterate but dreamed of a university education for their daughters. They invested their children with their hopes, but also with their lacks, their solitudes.
A Different Kind of Boy / 2014
Alexander is about to embark upon a life of forced independence. Almost 18, he’s just finished school and it’s time for him to move on from the sheltered security of his mother’s home. Diagnosed with autism, he will have to learn even the most menial of tasks: shopping, clipping his nails, tying his own shoes. “No,” says Alexander, when asked if he knows what autism means. “Does my mum also say that I’m autistic? I can’t figure out if I am autistic or not.” Naïvely trying to bond, as if Alexander’s condition could magically disappear, his older brother Sebastian invites him on an exciting adventure: a five-day, boys-only trip to Barcelona, complete with a soccer game, men’s-only magazines, a strip club and endless hours together on the road. But in this touching and often lighthearted portrait, good intentions are overcome by reality and excitement may soon turn to frustration.

Ultimo: Different Ways of Killing a National Hero / 2008
A tribute-cum-reformulation-in-film of Philippine National Hero Jose Rizal's poem "Mi Ultimo Adios," Khavn's "Ultimo: Different Ways of Killing a National Hero" explores identity and nationhood as viewed through the lens of a truly post-colonial individual. Ultimo is a 90-minute black-and-white silent film, with scenes from the director's meanderings in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain) interspersed with lines from Rizal's poem, which was written a day before the hero's execution in 1896. Waiting, ambivalence, and re-membering —themes usually tackled in literature and criticism— are investigated through a series of images: the mundane elevated to the affective through a sensibility that does not shy away from pushing the boundaries of art. This version is scored by a post-kundiman duet of guitar and banduria.

Rallies in Moscow. At Ivan’s door the bell is rung by a scared stranger who asks “to sit it out for a while”, explaining that she went by a rally and “accidentally” got her share. Vanya lets her in. But at the door an OMON officer turns up, who is looking for the most active protesters. Vanya opens: he has nothing to hide, especially since he hates these “morons shouting outside his window”. To get away, the beauty plays a whole performance before the OMON, involving Vanya; it becomes clear that she is not what she pretended to be.

Despre alte mame (Different Mothers) is based on a true story that happened to Polish movie director Kristofer Kieslowski during the filming of Station 1981 in which some of his footage was nearly used as evidence in a criminal case. Five young men go to a Station to film a documentary about People Waiting. Deciding to finish everything in one day, they stay till late in the night. As time passes by each of the characters is influenced, in a different way, by the events in the station and the accumulated fatigue.
