Three Women / 1952

The short stories of Guy de Maupassant enjoyed a renaissance in the early 1950s, thanks in great part to the Max Ophuls production Le Plaisir. In Trois Femmes, three De Maupassant stories are dramatized, each conveying the central theme of women falling in love. In the first, a black female carnival entertainer causes an uproar when she falls in love with a white soldier. In the second, a young bride is pressured into having a baby to collect a huge inheritance. And in the final episode, a pregnant girl is "adopted" and protected by a small circle of friends. In standard De Maupassant fashion, each of the three stories in Trois Femmes is capped by a surprise twist.

A man turning 50 (Walter Faber) narrates his liaisons with three women: Hanna, who was pregnant and left him many years ago in Zurich; Ivy, who broke up with him recently in New York; Sabeth who is 20 and whom he just met on a boat to Europe. Sabeth and the narrator travel to France, Italy and Greece. But who is Sabeth? What does she feel towards the narrator? What does he feel towards her? The entire movie is shot in subjective view (we only see what the narrator sees); there are no dialogues, just his post-synchronised voice.

Millie (Duvall) e Pinky (Spacek) lavorano come infermiere in un centro per anziani in California. Willie (Rule) è la moglie di Edgar, il padrone del saloon, e non ha altro da fare se non dilettarsi in decorazioni d'interni e di fondi di piscine. Pinky adora Millie, ma quando scopre che questa ha una relazione con Edgar, l'incanto finisce. Dopo capovolgimenti, liti e, soprattutto, dopo la morte misteriosa di Edgar, le tre donne vanno a vivere insieme. E' un film dell'epoca d'oro di Altman con un uso superlativo del sonoro (per la verità mortificato dalla versione italiana) e con una strepitosa Duvall (premiata a Cannes).

Ten years later, the ambitious Lukrecie is trying to avoid employment in the village. After she becomes pregnant by a prospective suitor, she meets an attractive young man who offers her a life abroad, something she had always dreamed of. Lukrecie resolves her situation in the most appalling way. Tana, the wife of a prosperous businessman, vainly longs to have a child. On the advice of a friend, she goes off to a spa, whose miraculous reputation is attributable to a skillful masseur. Her husband, however, is unmoved by the joyful news.

Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, per la prima volta tre donne americane furono fotoreporter ufficiali sul fronte europeo: Martha Gellhorn (1908-1998), moglie di Ernest Hemingway dal 1940 al 1945 e amica di Eleanor Roosevelt; Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971), che era stata un’altra delle grandi fotografe del New Deal; e Lee Miller (1907-1977), ex compagna di Man Ray e legata alle avanguardie artistiche. Luzia Schmid ricostruisce tre vite parallele attingendo a materiale spesso inedito, di grandissima drammaticità e qualità visiva, che riguarda soprattutto la liberazione dei lager di Ravensbrück, Buchenwald e Dachau, e la sconfitta della Germania. Fu un’esperienza che segnò profondamente tutte e tre; ma è stato grazie anche al loro occhio che l’Occidente ha cominciato a percepire la guerra in modo diverso, senza retorica maschilista: come una tragedia.
