Mike Lassiter (Gabriel Basso), ragazzo adolescente, uccide il padre violento (Jim Belushi). Un caso facile, un colpevole già scritto per tutti, ma non per l’ostinato avvocato difensore Richard Ramsey (Keanu Reeves), che ha promesso alla madre (Renée Zellweger) di scagionare suo figlio. In seguito all’omicidio, il giovane Mike decide di trincerarsi in un silenzio ostinato, non rispondendo ad alcuna domanda, dopo aver detto in prima battuta “andava fatto tanto tempo fa”. Un’apparente ammissione di colpa che non convince però Ramsey, intenzionato a portare alla luce la verità a qualunque costo. In un gioco di depistaggi e colpi di scena, si muovono testimoni non affidabili e personaggi ambigui, accompagnando lo spettatore in un labirinto di menzogne per un processo che si trasforma, passo dopo passo, in un’adrenalinica corsa contro il tempo.
