A New York, un giovane studente di arti marziali, Leroy Green (spesso chiamato Bruce Leroy), coltiva il sogno di diventare un grande artista marziale come il suo idolo Bruce Lee. Leroy si incammina nella ricerca per raggiungere il livello più alto nella pratica delle arti marziali, conosciuto come "Il Livello Finale" che conferirebbe a chi lo raggiunge "Il Bagliore", un'energia mistica che può essere conquistata solo da un vero maestro di arti marziali.

500 anni fa la nazione di Kumandra univa popoli differenti sotto il pacifico presidio dei Draghi. Solo il sacrificio dei Draghi permise all'umanità di salvarsi: il segreto del loro potere è rimasto racchiuso in una gemma magica, unica arma di difesa contro i Druun. Oggi Kumandra non esiste più, divisa tra nazioni belligeranti, che corrispondono ad altrettante "parti" del drago: Zanna, Artiglio, Cuore, Dorso e Coda. Raya, principessa di Cuore, prova a tendere la mano verso Namaari, giovane figlia della regina di Zanna, ma la fiducia in quest'ultima porterà a una terribile disgrazia e al ritorno dei Druun.

Nathan Phipps è un ricercatore che vive con la figlia ed una assistente su un'isola dell'oceano Pacifico che esegue esperimenti genetici sui draghi di Komodo. Questi presentano un comportamento molto aggressivo, soprattutto di notte, che spinge il dottor Phipps (finanziato dalla marina statunitense) a costruire una speciale recinzione elettrica per difendersi dai loro attacchi, quando arriva casualmente sull'isola un gruppo di rapinatori in fuga dopo il loro ultimo colpo. Quando alcuni dei draghi cominciano ad uccidere le persone, tentano insieme di fuggire via dall'isola. Il gruppo viene però attaccato da un drago di Komodo gigantesco, e non può fare altro che sperare di raggiungere l'elicottero dei criminali per potersi salvare.
