A film-crew in the early twentieth century, the cabaret known as ‘Le Fol Espoir’ has been transformed into an amateur soundstage. The motion picture tells the story of a ship and its passengers – from the famous opera singer down to the petty criminal. The film is an optimistic political fable intended to educate the masses. There’s comedy aplenty – slapstick punches, custard pies and gags reminiscent of Buster Keaton and Fatty Arbuckle; there’s adventure, high drama moments of great bravura , and passionate love stories. The filming begins on June 28th 1914, the day of the Archiduke Franz Ferdinand’s assassination in Sarajevo, the gunpowder that sets Europe alight. It ends with news of another assassination – that of Jean Jaures on July 31st followed by the general conscription of August 1st, heralded by church bells across France. The allegory of the shipwreck is filmed at breakneck pace during the last five weeks before war breaks out.

A fire started by Harry Thompson destroys the Liguria, a legendary ship of the 19th century, and its treasure of gold and diamonds sinks in the sea. Thompson manages to escape unaware that Albizetti sleeps in the same lifeboat he uses. They manage to arrive at a deserted island, which has also been reached on the opposite shore– by the other survivors of the shipwreck: three children, a woman and three men.

I naufraghi di Kerch / 2020

Sulle sponde di un mare scomparso, riemerge la storia degli italiani di Crimea e della loro deportazione nelle gelide steppe kazake, nel 1942. Un olocausto le cui tracce si confondono con il ritratto di un luogo e il racconto dei sopravvissuti. Il film documentario ci trasporta a Kerch, in Crimea, dove una minoranza di origine italiana giunta laggiù nel corso del 1800, lotta perché la loro storia venga riconosciuta e raccontata. Questa comunità di italiani nel 1942 venne accusata di sostenere il regime fascista e di aver collaborato con le truppe tedesche durante l'occupazione della città. Tra il 29 e il 30 gennaio i soldati sovietici incominciarono la deportazione degli italiani. Tutta la comunità venne fatta salire su treni merci alla volta delle gelide steppe kazake.
