Fate intervenes, when Charles, a young and over-worked American corporate lawyer, finds himself seated beside an elderly Chinese woman with a mysterious past, Auntie Ling on a contemporary flight from Shanghai to New York. After noticing the beautiful bouquet of Poppies that Charles has brought on-board the flight, Auntie Ling reminisces about the early years of her marriage to Shu Zhen, an opium trader in 1940s Shanghai, and tries to coax Charles out of his solitude. Slowly lured into her stories, Charles begins to see the layers beneath Auntie Ling's polished facade. Poppies brought Charles and Auntie Ling together, underscoring the fine line between joy and sorrow...life and death. Influenced by real events, Poppies explores the cross-cultural and cross-generational relationships that develop between strangers in mid-air.

Poppies Will Put Them to Sleep / 2024

The world of Oz is filled with many spheres—from crystal balls and floating orbs to the great cranial dome of the Wizard and his hot air balloon. This appropriated sequence from The Wizard of Oz has been transformed from a two-dimensional projection onto a three-dimensional sphere. The topography of the planetoid is created by the fluctuating brightness levels of individual pixels—the brighter the image, the higher the surface, distorting and obstructing the image as it is rotated around its axis. The alternating pattern of recognizable, iconic imagery and abstract, sculptural form creates a new kind of stellar object, hanging in open space. The scene, in which Dorothy and the gang run across a poppy field only to be drugged by the Wicked Witch, becomes a Christmas ornament or a snow globe, slowly spinning in celebration of the film. The rippling surface of the floating orb is created as the camera and its subjects move across the frame.

Where the Poppies Grow: The Lakehead at War /

Where the Poppies Grow is a short docu-drama about one soldier during the Great War. Alfred Saxberg was a first generation Finnish Canadian who signed up at the beginning of the war and was fortunate to return home in 1919. When the Great War ended In November 1918, the people of the Lakehead could take pride in the contributions they had made. Over 6,200 people enlisted either as volunteers or conscripts. At home, the community supported the war by raising money to assist soldiers’ wives, children, and other dependents. There were also campaigns to help finance the purchase of military equipment and to send personal items to the soldiers overseas. By the end of the conflict, approximately 300 people from the Lakehead were killed overseas or died of illness due to their war service. Thousands more were wounded in body and mind. Where the Poppies Grow is a docu-drama that looks at the sacrifices made by people from the Lakehead to secure victory in the war.
