Gli esempi recenti sono piazza Tiennamen, dove il 4 giugno del 1989 lo studente cinese affrontava il carro armato. Oppure la statua di Saddam abbattuta dagli americani nell’aprile del 2003. All’inizio del ’45, ormai sul finire della guerra, sei marines vennero fotografati mentre issavano, sulla cima di una collina dell’isola di Iwo Jima, la bandiera americana. Iwo, territorio vitale e sacro giapponese, fu battaglia cruentissima. Quella fotografia divenne il simbolo dell’azione e del cuore di chi combatteva e ci fu chi disse che quello scatto aveva fatto vincere la guerra contro il Giappone. Dei sei marines, tre morirono nel giorni successivi, gli altri tre furono adottati dalla nazione come eroi e come mito. Si chiamavano Ira Hayes, René Gagnon e Jhon Doc Bradley. Ira era un indiano.
