La vicenda inizia dopo l'armistizio di Cassibile: gli Alleati sono sbarcati in Italia e avanzano verso nord ma ancora non sono giunti nella capitale, dove la resistenza è già attiva. Giorgio Manfredi, militante comunista e uomo di spicco della resistenza, sfugge a una retata della polizia e si rifugia presso Francesco, un tipografo antifascista, il quale, il giorno seguente, dovrebbe sposare Pina, una vedova madre d'un bambino.
