Niko Fischer ha poco più di vent'anni e ha bisogno di un caffè. La fidanzata lo ha lasciato, lo sportello della banca gli ha trattenuto la carta di credito, suo padre ha scoperto che ha lasciato l'università e ha deciso di non passargli più il denaro mensile con cui lo manteneva ... e, come se non bastasse, la fortuna si mette di traverso e non c'è modo, per lui, di riuscire a prendere quel benedetto caffè. Da mattina a sera, l'occhio meccanico diretto (per la prima volta) da Jan Ole Gerster segue il pellegrinare di Niko nello spazio metropolitano berlinese: gli incontri con un amico, un'ex compagna di scuola, ma anche un nuovo vicino di casa e uno sconosciuto con una storia che viene da lontano ma pesa ancora, su tutti. Niko stesso è tanto il protagonista di questi incontri quanto il suo spettatore, guidato dall'inerzia ma chiamato in qualche modo a fare i conti, in una sola volta, con il presente, il passato e il futuro.
