In the fall of 1967, intermedia artists Ture Sjölander and Lars Weck collaborated with Bengt Modin, video engineer of the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation in Stockholm, to produce an experimental program called Monument. It was broadcast in January, 1968, and subsequently has been seen throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. Apart from the technical aspect of the project, their intention was to develop a widened consciousness of the communi - cative process inherent in visual images. They selected as source material the "monuments" of world culture— images of famous persons and paintings.

The Monument / 1976
The clacking of heels on the floor, to the rhythm of a measured walk, accompanies the movement of a camera that scrutinises a man in close up. Slowly, the camera turns around him, from his feet on the floor to the top of his head. The man doesn't move a muscle, with his arms lying straight by his side, as though he has become an object under a woman's eye, identifiable by the sound of her footsteps. The closeness of the camera fragments and fetishises the body. There are no wide shots at any point that might enable the man to be identified. The fragments glimpsed by the camera do not provide any identifying markers, rendering the overall view disproportionate. Like a "monument", the figure is presented to the audience.
Monument / 2003
Monument captures rocks in motion to create a dance to the unseen life of the natural world. This 1 minute 30 second piece questions the presumed permanence of stone's materiality, and imagines nature's visceral reaction to culture, in a momentary liberation from the laws of physics.
Monument / 1990
William Kentridge’s Monument is a captivating short animated film about the unveiling of a statue dedicated to the South African work force. This monument comes to life, and continues to suffer under the elite white regime. This celebration and memorialization of past injustices fails in its goal to silence or normalize these injustices, as the statue breaks the cinematic third wall and its breathing fills our ears.
Monument / 1969
The film, which can be seen as a preliminary study for Motion Picture, is 16 mm black / white footage of Torben Ulrich during exercise in HIKs tennis club in 1969. It wound back and forth during filming, made double exposures and filmed at various speeds. The film was shown mixed with Super-8 color recording from Copenhagen and from highways.

A selection of monologues describe the lives of individuals: normal people. Who are they and what connects them? As the narrative progresses we learn that something has happened. There's been an event, something that has changed everything. But when did it happen... and where? There are suggestions; talk of bankers bonuses and bombs but nothing is specified. Has it happened? Will it happen? Then we see that the subjects of the narrative are from dedications on memorial park benches that are very real; covered in moss and graffiti, heightening the confusion between what is real and what is not. Monument appears as a low budget doc about park benches but its narrative poses powerful questions about memory, memorial and the way of things...

The film shows the development of the Chinese city while highlighting the Portuguese presence: the official buildings, personalities of the colonial administration. The bust of the great poet Luis de Camões recalls the epic discoveries and the glory of navigators. The director observes the Chinese people, their activities, their hobbies. He seems fascinated and, perhaps in spite of himself, shows us a very dynamic Chinese city where the Portuguese seem to be tourists.
