Macbeth, valoroso condottiero, cede alla propria sete di potere per seguire la profezia che lo ha indicato come il futuro re di Scozia, fomentato dalla moglie la cui ambizione è assai più intensa e frustrata della propria. L'ascesa al trono di Macbeth prevede l'eliminazione fisica del reggente in carica, e sarà seguita da una serie di delitti sempre più efferati, poichè l'uomo, divorato da dubbi e paure, vede ostacoli in chiunque. E Lady Macbeth si renderà conto di aver creato un mostro che non può più controllare.

Incitato dal responso di una profezia di tre streghe che lo vede incoronato re e dall'ambiziosa moglie, Macbeth uccide brutalmente il re Duncan di Scozia. Per assicurarsi il trono fa assassinare poi il suo fedele compagno e amico Banquo, al quale le streghe avevano promesso di diventare padre di una stirpe di re. La scia di violenza prosegue e Lady Macbeth presa forse dal rimorso si ammala gravemente per poi morire. Anche Macbeth, ormai schiavo delle predizioni delle streghe, viene infine ucciso dai rivoltosi che riportano sul trono il legittimo erede Malcolm.

Entirely shot on green screen, Shakespeare’s Macbeth has been reinvented by director Kit Monkman (The Knife That Killed Me) in an exciting new film adaptation. Starring Mark Rowley, (The Last Kingdom, Luther). Monkman’s unique adaptation successfully bridges the gap between theatre and film to create a wholly new type of imaginative space. This radical new adaptation puts the audience’s engagement with the story centre-stage, amplifying the theatrical context of the original and creating truly innovative and thrilling cinematic vistas, whilst maintaining the language and themes of Shakespeare’s original play. Using background matte painting and computer modelling to generate the world in which the action plays out, the green screen allows Monkman to create his vision of a multi-tiered globe in which the characters play out their various fates.
