L'Exode d'un peuple / 1939

At the start of 1939 an exodus of nearly 500,000 Spanish Republicans, soldiers and civilians together, fleeing Franco's troops crossed the border to France. Louis Llech, a Perpignan based shopkeeper and enlightened amateur cineaste, owned a 16mm camera. Together with his friend Isambert, he filmed this extraordinary migration. Fascinated by the military aspect of this Retirada, he favoured shots of parades, of crowds, like those showing military equipment. He nonetheless also showed civilian distress, without insisting on its picturesque aspects, focussing more on images of the uninterrupted flow of refugees.

Mosè e Ramses sono allevati come fratelli da Seti, faraone che governa con saggezza la sua gente e difende i suoi confini con l'aiuto dell'esercito e la benevolenza degli dèi. In battaglia Mosè, raccolto dalle acque del Nilo da una principessa e cresciuto come un figlio da Seti, salva la vita a Ramses, principe irrequieto e complessato, che alla morte del padre e su consiglio della madre decide di esiliarlo. Le origini ebraiche di Mosè, rivelate dai saggi, che riconoscono in lui il profeta che libererà il loro popolo da una schiavitù lunga quattrocento anni, gli alienano la lealtà del fratellastro e lo conducono verso un destino più grande. Abbandonato nel deserto, Mosè trova soccorso tra le braccia di una donna araba e di un dio-bambino, che 'arma' il suo braccio contro Ramses e lo guida con gli ebrei fuori dall'Egitto e verso la Terra Promessa. Il faraone, ostinato e superbo, dichiara guerra a Mosè e al suo popolo, conducendo gli egiziani alla rovina sul fondo del Mar Rosso.

Operation Peter Pan: Flying Back to Cuba / 2011

Between 1960 and 1962 more than 14,000 cuban children were sent alone by their parents to the USA. This clandestine operation -with the participation of the CIA and the Catholic Church- became known as "Operation Peter Pan". Many of the parents had expected to follow their children, who had been granted visa waivers by the US government, but the Missile Crisis terminated the flights between the two countries and the children found themselves stranded in the USA. In 2009, for the first time a group of the Peter Pan children, now adults visited Cuba to give "closure and make peace with the land where they were born".

The Danube Exodus / 1998

In the travelogue "The Danube Exodus," Forgács documents the Jewish exodus from Slovakia just before the beginning of World War II. In two boats, a group of nine hundred Slovak, Austrian Jews tried to reach the Black Sea via the river Danube, in order to get to Palestine from there. Forgács based his film on the amateur films of Captain Nándor Andrásovits, the captain of one of the boats. He filmed his passengers while they prayed, slept and even got married. At the end of this journey, it is clear that the boat will not return empty: a reverse exodus takes place, this time of repatriating Bessarabian Germans, fleeing to the Third Reich because of the Soviet invasion of Bessarabia
