Doug Carlin è l’agente dell’ATF, sezione alcolici, tabacchi e armi da fuoco, incaricato di indagare sull’attentato terroristico che ha fatto esplodere e affondare un traghetto fluviale uccidendo centinaia di passeggeri. Lo stesso giorno, sulle rive del fiume viene rinvenuto il corpo senza vita di Claire Kuchever, una giovane donna che Doug sente di avere già conosciuto e amato perdutamente. Scoprirà presto che l’omicidio è collegato all’esplosione. Avvicinato da Pryzwarra, agente dell’FBI, Doug è reclutato per la durata dell’indagine da un’unità segreta altamente tecnologica che gestisce informazioni satellitari, registrazioni digitali che ricostruiscono e osservano gli avvenimenti passati. Convinto di investigare un passato finito e accaduto che gli permetterà di scovare l’attentatore, Doug scopre che la scienza ha piegato quel passato fino a costruire un ponte col presente. Difficile resistere a Claire e alla tentazione di alterare il corso degli eventi.

Il film è ambientato un anno dopo gli avvenimenti della serie televisiva. I protagonisti vivono nella linea temporale Steins;Gate, ma Okabe continua ad avere nella sua mente dei deja vu delle linee temporali alfa e beta. La sua capacità di avere il reading steiner fa sì che l'esistenza di Okabe sia in qualche modo parallela alle due linee e venga negata nella linea Steins;Gate. Così Okabe svanisce nel nulla e nessuno più ricorda la sua esistenza. Ma Makise Kurisu sente di aver perso qualcosa di importante ed è decisa a reinventare la time leap machine per scoprire di cosa si tratta e trovare un modo per riportare indietro Okabe.

The films quickly fall out of synch with one another. Déjà-vu uses footage from D.O.A. 1949-50, a Hollywood thriller directed by Rudolph Mateé. The film has been transferred to video and is projected simultaneously on three parallel screens at normal speed as well as slightly faster and slightly slower - 25, 24 and 23 frames per second (left to right). This has the effect of making the three identical narratives diverge increasingly over time, and inducing in the viewer an experience similar to déjà-vu.
