CHE IN CONGO - DREAM OF LIBERATION (F/F)

An urgent meditation on the legacy of revolutionary war framed by the combatants, survivors and inheritors of violence. 1965: Che Guevara undertakes a secret mission to DR Congo to support the liberation movement. Fifty years later we travel to Belgium, Cuba and eastern Congo in search of those who fought alongside – and against – this global icon. We find the Belgian former mercenary who says his years fighting in the mountains of eastern Congo were the best of his life; the Cuban generals and Congolese soldiers he trained. We hear from men and women as they strive to raise their children in the long shadows of war and colonialism. Narrated by a Congolese radio journalist, hers is the voice of the new DRC. In her words, and in rare footage and images, the country’s vital future unfolds.

The Liberation of the Mannique Mechanique / 1967

The Liberation of the Mannique Mechanique

Although best known for his photography, Steven Arnold also wrote, designed, and directed several groundbreaking visionary films, The Liberation of Mannique Mechanique being the first. Stuart Comer of the Tate Modern (London) said of Mannique: “a macabre, decadent work presenting mannequins and models that travel through strange universes toward possible self-discovery.” Brooklyn-based artist and writer Kate Wadkins in a recent online article observed: “Arnold’s films are dream-like visions of androgynous beings. Their narratives are modern-day fairy tales and reveries about gender — all through the lens of an acid trip.”

Childcare: People's Liberation (Newsreel #56) / 1970

Childcare: People's Liberation (Newsreel #56)

The film shows how community run childcare centers are a step toward liberation, by giving parents and children a chance to develop relationships with their peers and new relationships with each other. Focusing in the need for childcare and what good childcare could be, the film interviews women who express their desperation to find a safe environment for their children, and shows them taking positive action. Filming in daycare centers, it records what good parent-controlled daycare could mean for children as well as parents. Filmmakers Bonnie Friedman and Karen Mitnik said, "Being activist filmmakers, we were interested in showing everyday people taking control of their situation by utilizing empty community space to set up their own daycare centers. Using equipment shared amongst several projects within the Newsreel collective, we shot mostly on the streets of New York City with a Bolex and Nagra for sound."
