Diverse vicende parallele si articolano in contesti spazio-temporali diversi e convergeranno alla fine nell'atto estremo di uno dei protagonisti, il quale entrerà in una banca aprendo il fuoco contro alcuni malcapitati avventori, e in seguito si toglierà la vita nella propria autovettura. I vari frammenti sono articolati secondo un modello irregolare, e i vari momenti del film trovano in apertura alcune immagini riprese da telegiornali reali che raccontano vicende di cronaca appartenenti all'epoca in cui è uscito il film.
