A Bronte Christmas / 1980

Made by Yorkshire Television, this programme presented by Richard Whiteley is a look at Christmas celebrations in the village of Haworth in West Yorkshire, the home of the Bronte sisters. The special, first broadcast 18th December, 1980, includes footage of children waving from window of steam train in Haworth Railway Station, Haworth High Street with choir singing carols outside church, and Santa on a train talking to local children.

Brontë Country is a term often used to describe the beautiful corner of England where the great literary sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë lived and drew inspiration for their novels. The Brontë Parsonage Museum, in Haworth, West Yorkshire was home to the Brontë family and it’s from this atmospheric, grey stone house that our journey will begin. Step back in time and wander the cobbled streets of Haworth where the Brontë sisters walked, going about their everyday lives. A preserved steam railway that runs through the town allows a glimpse of how the Brontës would have travelled greater distances. Closer to home, discover the winding, rugged paths which led the sisters out into the dramatic landscape of “Wuthering Heights”, where the Brontë Falls cascade down the valley under the Brontë Bridge.

Nel venerdì che precede la Pasqua, la comunità si riunisce per le strade del paese per commemorare la passione e la crocifissione di Cristo. È un momento che, nel suo simbolismo, è impregnato di forti sentimenti di penitenza e di preghiera, attraverso una processione organizzata da quasi tutte le chiese del comune e le varie confraternite, che iniziano il loro cammino per incontrarsi sulle strette vie dove ha inizio la sacra rappresentazione.

I pistacchi di Bronte crescono alle pendici dell’Etna, in provincia di Catania, in terreni impervi e ricchi di ceneri. Qui, l’oro verde di Sicilia viene coltivato per 4000 ettari di campi, e i suoi preziosi frutti vengono raccolti ad anni alterni. Ancora oggi si utilizzano in dialetto i termini “frastucara” e “frastuca” derivanti dall’arabo “fristach” e “frastuch”, per indicare la pianta e il frutto. Pianta resistente, longeva e con grandi capacità di adattamento, conquistò le sciare del territorio brontese, dove il terreno concimato in modo naturale dalle ceneri dell’Etna favorì la produzione di pistacchi con qualità uniche. Il documentario di Chiara Francesca Pecorino racconta il processo di raccolta e trattamento di questo frutto grazie all’utilizzo di appositi macchinari e tecniche di asciugatura.
