Nel 1870, nel Texas ancora ferito dalla sconfitta nella Guerra civile, Jefferson Kyle Kidd, ex capitano dell'esercito confederato, gira di città in città per leggere ad alta voce, durante affollatissime assemblee, le "notizie dal mondo" pubblicate sui giornali americani.
