Leontes exiles his newborn daughter Perdita, who is raised by shepherds for sixteen years and falls in love with the son of Leontes' friend. When Perdita returns home, a statue of Hermione "comes to life", and everyone is reconciled.

La storia di questa ragazza-madre e dei tre uomini che ama contemporaneamente, ma in modo diverso, sfiora le 2 ore, durata insolita per il passo agile e leggero di Rohmer. Qua e là sembra prolisso: la lunga citazione di The Winter's Tale di Shakespeare; le chiacchierate colte del bibliotecario Loic e dei suoi amici; il microdocumentario su Nevers che conserva le reliquie di santa Bernadette Soubirous. Sono divagazioni, però, non cadute nella prolissità, sostenute dal ritmo decontratto, dall'ironia sommessa, da una sorridente saggezza.
