Uno degli eventi che più l'hanno traumatizzata è stato un aborto, che ha subito dietro insistenza della madre. Un giovane medico, il dr. Mike Donaldson, la cura secondo metodi innovativi che ricorrono alla terapia di gruppo e ottiene buoni risultati; ma quando il medico si allontana da lei perchè non gli viene rinnovato il contratto, Janice passa sotto le cure del dr. Carswell e subisce degli elettroshock che aggravano il suo stato mentale. Quando torna in famiglia, le sue condizioni peggiorano e, nonostante un disperato tentativo di aiutarla da parte di un ragazzo innamorato di lei, la ragazza non potrà che essere ricondotta in ospedale...
