A young man, Ryan, suffering from a disability, wishes to join the other kids from his schools football team. During an initiation rite, Ryan is swept away through a whirlpool to the land of Tao. There he is hunted by the evil Lord Komodo, who desires the boy as a key to enter the real world. Ryan is rescued by the protectors of Tao, five humanoid kangaroos, each embued with the five elements and virtues. Ryan learns his valuable lesson while saving the land of Tao.

Warriors of Virtue: The Return to Tao (set a few years after the original film) sees a new villain, Dogon, seize control of Tao, a parallel universe forming the film's major setting. On Earth, 12–year–old Ryan and his friend Chucky arrive at a martial arts competition in Beijing, whereupon they are unexpectedly taken to Tao. There, it is shown that they are to become Warriors of Virtue.

Nel XIV secolo Cina e Corea sono sotto la dominazione dei Mongoli, la cui potenza sta tuttavia volgendo al tramonto. In questo scenario si muovono i due protagonisti della pellicola. Jinha è l'erede di un'antica e micidiale scuola di scherma coreana, i cui segreti sono bramati da molti. Sullie è la figlia illegittima del potente geneale cinese Taruga. I due sono cresciuti insieme e giunti all'età adulta hanno finito con l'innamorarsi perdutamente l'uno dell'altra, ma il destino trama contro di loro. Taruga ha infatti deciso di dare la figlia in sposa al nobile Junkwang e quando Jinha parte alla ricerca dell'amata finisce per scontrarsi con le truppe del generale e viene dato per morto. Per salvare il figlio concepito dall'unione con l'amato, Sullie sposa Junkwang, cedendo infine alle insistenze del padre, senza però mai dimenticare Jinha.
