Gli Yamazaki sono una famiglia alla deriva. Il padre Kiyoshi è un giornalista televisivo, umiliato dai propri colleghi. La moglie Keiko fa uso di droghe e, nel tempo libero, si prostituisce. La figlia Miki è scappata di casa e, per mantenersi, segue le orme della madre. Una sera Kiyoshi è colpito violentemente con un masso da un ragazzone allampanato. Kiyoshi lo invita casa propria e inizia a chiamarlo Mr.Q. Quando Keiko rientra a casa, Mr Q. l'abbraccia, riuscendo a farle provare un piacere dimenticato; la donna allora si tocca insistentemente i seni, facendone fuoriuscire del latte. Anche Miki è a sua volta stata colpita da Mr Q. ma quando rientra a casa vede dalla finestra del giardino il padre attaccato ad un capezzolo della madre. La figlia si unisce all'abbraccio dei genitori, mentre il figlio gioca nel lago di latte fioriuscito dai seni della madre.

While The Night Visitors is interested in moths as organisms, with fascinating life histories, staggering biodiversity, and a functional importance as indicators of climate change and habitat degradation, its engagement with them is not primarily entomological. Instead, the film looks at moths as aesthetic beings and as carriers of meaning, aiming for a deep encounter with the beauty and incommensurability of the profoundly other. The small hours of the night are threaded through with a sense of mortality and loss. Moths, with their trembling and exquisite impermanence, provide both a kind of solace and, in their diversity and difference, a focal point around which the desire to know can be organized.
