Eliane Radigue - Virtuoso Listening / 2011
This intimate documentary portraits the life and career of the French electronic music composer Eliane Radigue. Now in her eighties, Eliane Radigue is a justly celebrated figure in electronic music. Her work has roots in Europe's post-war avant garde, and she has been linked with the pioneers of American minimalism such as Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and Steve Reich, but her monumental meditative compositions have taken a singular path, transporting the listener into new realms of sound. Between 1967 and 2000, Eliane Radigue composed more than twenty pieces of electronic music. She stopped working with the analogic synthesizer in 2001, and now devotes herself to instrumental music, still remaining faithful to the same aesthetics.

Conlon Nancarrow: Virtuoso of the Player Piano /
Conlon Nancarrow won a MacArthur Genius Grant for his amazing compositions for the Player Piano - the only instrument that could perform his rhythmically astonishing music back in the 1940s when he began. Born in Arkansas, he left to fight against the fascists in the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930s and during the Communist 'witch hunts' of the 1940s he emigrated to Mexico where he lived the rest of his life focusing on his highly complex, but viscerally exciting musical creations. This film features filmed performances of his exciting music on player pianos, a live performance of a recently discovered piece and interviews with his friends and followers. He died in 1997, and 2012 marks the centenary of his birth.

Lucy Hickenlooper lived at a time when music was dominated by men and Old World prejudices----and she emerged as a leader among many. Against tremendous odds she rose from complete obscurity to be the most successful American woman concert pianist of the early 20th Century. - Lorri Holt, Frederica von Stade
