The first feature by editor Catherine Legault, SISTERS: DREAM & VARIATIONS invites us to discover the creative and personal worlds of two distinctive Montreal artists. Tyr and Jasa have Icelandic roots, and they’ve always been artists at heart. Having become a musician and an interdisciplinary artist respectively, they have developed artistic practices that draw on their colourful imaginations and family roots, including the use of audio recordings of their Icelandic great-grandmother. In a symbiotic relationship with its protagonists’ creativity, the film includes animations and performances in order to do justice to Tyr and Jasa’s artistic approach and particular identity, deftly combining reality and dreams.

Green spills over purple ridges and into deep cut valleys. Blue surges up from rounds and hollows, blending with incandescent pink plains, revealing what seems to be the outline of the human face. Scribble spins on blue space in abstract, erratic lines, gaining in momentum and mass to form a coherent link to something recognizable. Crude, bold, darting lines. Black and white scribble. A lace work of electric sparks. These are some of the variations encountered in Kuchar's new film VARIATIONS. Roubaix, a city with an industrial past, is today one of France’s most destitute areas. During six months of shooting in public places, the filmmaker asked the townspeople to think of one or more things they had been told in the past and that had somehow changed them. Through thirteen sequence shots and microscopic images, she then constructed a sort of cartography of micro-transformations of human trajectories, a poetical study of the dynamism of individuals. In between the extraneousness of the images and the intimate closeness of the voices, the ambiguous space of the singular/plural identity is offered to the experience of the public.

Supermoon Variations / 2021

In Amy Cutler’s "Supermoon Variations", a red super-moon is evocatively refracted through lenses and 35mm nature slides. Filmed during lockdown from Cutler’s London balcony, the film captures a night-time performance in which shapes are barely visible, with an immersive soundtrack intensifying glimmers of detail and illusionary perspectives of human scale.
