Geneviève vive a Cherbourg con la madre vedova che gestisce un negozio di ombrelli. Ama Guy, giovane meccanico. Sul loro rapporto cade l'improvvisa tegola del richiamo alle armi: è in corso infatti la guerra d'Algeria ed è ambientato nel 1957. I due giovani si promettono eterno amore ma, quando Geneviève scopre di essere incinta, Guy è ormai partito per il fronte. Nei primi mesi si scrivono, ma poi Guy non risponde alle lettere di Geneviève, che spinta dalla madre, sposa Roland, un facoltoso rappresentante di gioielli, e si trasferisce a Parigi. Tornando dalla guerra, Guy non trova più la sua amata. La sua disperazione però è alleviata da Madeleine. La storia inizia nel novembre 1957 e termina nel dicembre 1963. È da notare l'uso di colori pastello molto accesi in tutte le scene, spesso coordinando quello delle scene con gli abiti dei personaggi.

Umbrellas in the Sun takes its title from the 1981 video compilation of the same name released by chic Belgian label Les Disques du Crépuscule (TWI 099), and features selected clips from that project, as well as footage from A Factory Video (Fact 56), A Factory Complication (FBN 7) and A Factory Outing (Fact 71). Plus previously unseen material - the definitive genre document! Featuring cover art by Crépuscule design director Benoît Hennebert, the DVD contains 23 clips filmed between 1979 and 1987 and runs for over 2 hours. The audio soundtracks have been digitally remastered. The disc is Region 0 (multi-region), NTSC format.

Lecomte is not aware that it has to be a real murder.
