Taiwan, anni '50 e '60 del Novecento; Ah Hsiao, detto Ah Ha, cresce con i tre fratelli e la sorella nell'isola dove il padre (Tien) si è trasferito dalla Cina. La nonna sogna sempre di tornare in patria, il padre muore presto, poi toccherà anche alla madre e alla stessa nonna. Attingendo dichiaratamente all'autobiografia (il regista firma la sceneggiatura con Chu Tien-wen), Hou racconta un'infanzia e un'adolescenza come tante altre, in cui la storia di Taiwan scorre in modo solo apparentemente indolore. Una giovinezza punteggiata da bravate, lotte tra bande, innamoramenti platonici e momenti di tenerezza, segnata irrimediabilmente da tre morti che appaiono man mano più inaspettate, ma anche accettate sempre più fatalisticamente.

An impressionistic, black-and-white portrait of the day-to-day of a nonagenarian woman as she experiences the final act of her life. Danuta Szaflarska stars as Aniela, who lives in a massive yet rapidly-deteriorating wooden house, filled with souvenirs and treasures of eras gone by. Aniela runs into conflict in her dealings with others, particularly a nasty neighbor who sees her property as an eyesore and wants to do everything in his reach to buy it up and tear it down, and her married adult son, who - though kindly - triggers paranoia within Aniela (she cannot help but believe that he is scheming and planning to wheedle the property away from her). Driven aback by these individuals, Aniela finds one of her only sources of comfort and reassurance in her daily talks with her dog, Fila - and develops a great affinity for spying on the neighbors' doings whenever boredom creeps in.

A World War II vet sets out in 1948 to avenge the death of his wife at the hands of Nazis. His targets are four Germans, a Sicilian, and a Hungarian who committed the atrocities. He is aided by a CIA operative, who has another agenda. One of the targeted men is being groomed by the US to become the West German chancellor and is to be protected. Along the way, a third person joins the team.
