Il film racconta di un vecchio e povero pescatore di nome Santiago, sfortunato ma molto tenace nonostante la sua età. Un giorno, sentendosi pieno di buone speranze e fortuna, si alza molto presto e va a pescare al largo con la sua piccola barchetta di legno e dopo un po' di tempo, con il suo stupore, abbocca nientemeno che un grandissimo pescespada. Ci mette quasi tre giorni per catturarlo ma alla fine ce la fa, anche se molto provato e con le mani lacere a causa degli strettoni della lenza per via della grande forza del pesce. Alla fine riesce a pescarlo e a legarlo alla sua barca ma degli squali lo avvistano e cominciano a divorarlo in parte, lasciando una scia di sangue nel mare. Questa scia comincia ad attirare sempre più squali che lo mangiano completamente.

With all his great experience and strength, he struggles with the fish for three days, admiring its strength, dignity, and faithfulness to its identity; its destiny is as true as Santiago’s as a fisherman. He finally reels the marlin in and lashes it to his boat. However, Santiago’s exhausting effort goes for naught. Sharks are drawn to the tethered marlin, and, although Santiago manages to kill a few, the sharks eat the fish, leaving behind only its skeleton.
