The Listeners follows new volunteer trainees in suicide prevention as they answer suicide hotlines. Through their eyes and ears the film examines mental health and suicide prevention, volunteerism and the life-saving power of empathy.

Claire, a popular English teacher, begins to hear a low humming sound that no one else around her can hear. This seemingly innocuous noise gradually upsets the balance of her life, increasing tension between herself and her husband, Paul, and daughter, Ashley. But despite multiple doctors, no obvious source or medical cause can be found.

Grammy-nominated Mazzoli was the first woman to be commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera and has already successfully collaborated with librettist Vavrek, with whom she wrote the opera Breaking the Waves.

Per poterlo vendere alla cifra esorbitante che costa, però, il software deve rimanere segreto, affinché nessuno ne scopra i limiti. E invece accade che Francesca Savelli, a Roma, entri casualmente in possesso di una valigetta contenente i progetti del programma.
