Thomas Creo è rispettivamente un conquistador, uno scienziato e un astronauta che vuole vincere la morte e salvare la donna che ama, Isabel: una scrittrice, una regina, un pensiero fatto albero di vita. Il viaggio epico di Thomas ha inizio nella Spagna del sedicesimo secolo, governata da Isabella e minacciata dal Grande Inquisitore, prosegue nello studio di un biologo del ventunesimo secolo e termina con un esploratore del futuro in viaggio verso Xibalba, una nebulosa lontana. Tre storie, un personaggio e un solo amore per tre periodi temporali che confluiranno davanti all'Albero della Vita, una pianta leggendaria la cui linfa dona a chi la beve la vita eterna. Set during the first World War in neutral, but pro-German, Holland, Lewis Allison, an interned British officer, is paroled to the castle of Baron Von Leyden and finds living there, but now married to German officer Rupert Von Narwitz, his childhood sweetheart Julie. Long discussions between Julie and Allison, centering on family conflicts that kept them apart, take place before the severely wounded Von Narwitz returns to the castle and more long discussions ensue.

James Fotopoulos’s meditative video consists mostly of stills of three actresses—variously clothed, nude, or masked—so similar in appearance that their identities sometimes seem to merge. Allusive dialogue spoken by various voices (one of them computer generated) traces the outer boundaries of narrative coherence, but also contains echoes of Bergman’s Persona. Some of the dialogue bespeaks the characters’ discomfort within their own bodies (“Why are you cutting yourself and hitting people?”), a theme that informs much of Fotopoulos’s work. While the corresponding images reinforce the theme of the body as a trap, his use of techniques that amplify video noise seem to leave room for the possibility of transcendent transformation.

Ma nonostante la passione che li lega la ragazza sposa il direttore di un importante giornale: questi, suggestionato dalla moglie, finisce per sostenere il giovane. In questo modo l'architetto può realizzare i suoi disegni decisamente fuori del comune.

Tre giovani americane a Roma, fra amori corrisposti, tentativi di seduzione e aspirazioni al sacrificio. Nubi all'orizzonte, ma la fine (dopo la tradizionale moneta nella fontana di Trevi) è rasserenante. Strepitoso successo, all'epoca, per un film abile nel fondere vicenda e cornice. Oscar alla fotografia e alla miglior canzone.
