Report - Commentary of a Commentary / 1987

Lewandowsky's 'Report' is a collage on the eroticism of power. The film consists of 4-5 basic motifs that repeat themselves in cyclic montage. Television images of politicians, ecclesiastical dignitaries, the East German army, military combat jets, and wrecking balls are cut against each other, underlaid with martial industrial music. Again and again, an image is faded in of a woman exposing her breasts. Originally created as accompaniment to a theatrical staging of Shakespeare's tragedy "Titus Andronicus".

3 short movies: "Enemies in Four Directions": A bunch of thugs, an assassin who uses a screwdriver as a weapon of choice, a young gigolo and his housewife "customer," and other motley crew of guests converge in a hotel, creating havoc for one another through a series of misunderstandings and identity confusions. "My Nike": In contrast, is a modest, gentle but savvy evocation of an urban lower-middle class family life in 1980s Korea. The chapter is told from the point of view of a 14 yo junior high school student whose greatest desire in the world is to own a pair of Nike sneakers. "The Church Sister": Stars Kim Il-yong as a young soldier on a vacation leave. He is secretly in love with the friendly and beautiful "big sister" from the Sunday school, whom he has known since childhood. They go see a movie, eat lunch together, walk around the neighbourhood aimlessly, waiting for the train to carry him off to the barracks. Will he confess his true feelings to her in time?

Dr. Savaş Arslan directs a documentary portraying the story of Sigmund Weinberg, who was one of the pioneers of the history of cinema in Turkey. Illustrating the social life of Istanbul at the turn of the 20th century, the documentary follows the technological developments of the period from the camera to the gramophone, and from cinema to automobiles, as it traces Weinerg’s family members who have been scattered across five different continents, and portrays the opening of Istanbul’s first cinema theater in 1908. A Sigmund Weinberg Docu-commentary provides an in-depth study of Sigmund Weinberg, the official photographer, film producer and director of both Sultan Abdülhamid II and Sultan Mehmed V Reşad, a century ago during a period of constant transformations. Using a witty language, the filmincludes interviews with film historians Burçak Evren and Giovanni Scognamillo, while comparing and contrasting shadow play and cinema through the examples of Karagöz and Weinberg.

The picture consists of two parts, the characters of which are busy commenting on what is happening to them and in the whole world. In the first part ("A Babysitter for a Boy"), the author plays with a literary character and a plot. In the second part ("Commentator for the Poet") The author plays with a fictional Poet (in turn, also with the author), who is portrayed by the Author-commentator. However, this Author is not the last in the hierarchy of similar characters.
