The Cigarette / 2023

25 composers, 25 filmmakers, 25 ultimate symbioses of music and cinematography that fit completely within the DNA of Film Fest Gent and the World Soundtrack Awards. For the unique 2x25 project, the festival asked 25 composers to compose a short piece of music, after which 25 filmmakers made a short film. The result: 25 exceptional films where the music inspired the form, narrative and texture.

The Cigarette and the Weed / 1981

The Cigarette and the Weed tells the story of a weed growing on a street corner, and a discarded cigarette butt that rolls up to the weed. The two converse before the cigarette rolls into a puddle and is extinguished.

The Last Cigarette / 1999

In 1994, the Health and Environment Subcommittee of the US Congress, chaired by Henry Waxman (D-California), held a hearing on tobacco products and health. Excerpts from the hearing, where the CEOs of the four US tobacco companies testified, are interspersed with clips from movies, educational films, TV commercials, and other promotional materials. Among the topics addressed in the hearing: are cigarettes the single most dangerous consumer product, how many people die annually in the US from smoking, is nicotine addictive, should smoking be banned in public places, do tobacco ads target children? This historic hearing is referenced in the 1999 film, "The Insider."

In 2011, Leah decided to go to Lebanon to film with her grandmother. Two weeks after the shoot, her grandmother died of metastatic lung cancer. It took her 12 years to get the courage to revisit their last conversations. Through memories and poems she draws the portrait of her grandmother in homage to her unique character.

One day, a film crew uses Zina as an extra in an outdoor scene, and the cameraman, Latugin, falls in love with her. Latugin soon arranges an acting job for Zina. To complicate matters further, Zina has yet another admirer in Oliver MacBride, an American businessman who is visiting Moscow.
