In un mondo in cui androidi (SIMS) e umani coesistono, seguiamo Faye (Brewster), che ha già staccato la spina al suo defunto marito, e ora non riesce a fare lo stesso con Evan (Amell), la sua controparte androide. Invece di disattivare Evan, Faye lo manda a vivere illegalmente per conto suo. Lì incontra Casey (Liu), un brillante programmatore che lo aiuta a diventare più umano per riconquistare Faye. All’insaputa di Evan, il suo nuovo amico è ricercato per essere interrogato da un determinatissimo agente dell’Artificial Intelligence Compliance Enforcement (AICE) (Worthington). Evan deve così conquistare il cuore di Faye prima che vengano scoperti e che lui perda tutto.

A young copywriter Sergey dreams of escaping from a boring life and writing a novel. He quits his job, locks himself alone in his apartment to devote all his time to this, but the process is difficult. One day he notices in the reflection of the mirror on the door of an old massive cabinet that the page on the laptop screen is covered with text, while in reality it is completely empty. Sergey copies the written text from the reflection and realizes that this is the beginning of the novel, which he tried to invent himself. Soon Sergey gets acquainted with a mirror image of himself, which seems to him more confident, free and talented. Reflection gradually subordinates Sergey, gains power over him, teaches him how to become productive and successful. But what is the price of this success and the chances of finding yourself again

The perversity of control, power, consumption, compared to images designed to enhance the sensory side, are some of the topics covered. SIMULACRUM evokes chaotic scenarios transposing us to the origin of cinema in a disturbing way.

The Function of Fiction is the Abstraction and Simulation of Social Experience / 2021

Image production is fiction-weaving. Together with Sheena Absalud, we spent an entire day in Pride Month in my room documenting ourselves using different cameras: three mobile phones, one action camera, one CCTV camera, and one laptop, while asking each other questions about our asexuality. Recognizing the role of the moving image in constructing prejudice, self-identity, and desires, and therefore the expansion of neoliberalism, "The Function of Fiction" attempts to abandon temptations to define “asexuality” and its place in the context of “LGBTQIA+”, in pursuit of new socialities and possibilities. Music in the film was spawned with plants and machines.
