"This work was recorded during a live performance (1985) in front of an audience. It was created with custom built hardware and software in "real time" using a single b/w live camera input. The props used were retro-reflective sticks and wrist bands that were "waved" or "manipulated" [...] The music "Hikari" was not performed live. We worked live to the prerecorded track by Maggi Payne. She created it specifically for these performances." -ET

"Our apartment was one hundred years old, and it was haunted. Friends suggested that we paint a black spot on the ceiling to get rid of the ghost. She wasn't a bad ghost, she was just an old hooker. She kept turning the front hall light on and off, and opening doors for her johns, who came at all hours of the night. She loved sex and she loved parties, so we were forced to have sex and parties all the time to appease her. Other ghosts were also there: immigrants who spoke neither English nor French. They had come from far away, and longed to return to their homelands. Sometimes they sang sad songs. Shimmer started as their story. Set in the near future. An unexpected nuclear disaster strikes and changes everyone’s fate. As the law and order are destroyed, the world descends into chaos. Chiu-Meng, a military officer, has been looking for her missing son since the catastrophe happened. Driven by desperation, she turns herself into a cold-blooded swordswoman indifferent to people around her. Only when she runs into a man and a boy who insist on doing good deeds does she realize that there is still hope in the world. Nevertheless, they soon get trapped by a group of cannibals. Chiu-Meng now has to fight to protect this dim ray of hope.
