Seances / 2016

Seances, co-created with the National Film Board of Canada, presents a wholly new way of experiencing film narrative. By dynamically generating a series of film sequences in unique configurations, potentially hundreds of thousands of new stories are conjured by code. Each will exist only in the moment—no pausing, scrubbing, or sharing—offering the audience one chance to see the generated film. This project, co-created by the ever imaginative Guy Maddin, is a visual discourse on the impact of loss within film. All the sequences pay homage to lost silent films from the early day of cinema. Seances is nostalgic but it is also frequently hilarious. Part of the joy and sadness of Seances is that many possible narratives are created but they can be only viewed once before they disappear forever.

A Spiritualistic Seance / 1911

M. Instead, is a spiritualist and decides to invite some friends to a seance. His daughter, Lucy, however, is much more interested in a certain young man, and when papa goes out to send telegrams to his guests she proceeds to entertain her admirer. Unfortunately papa returns with some of his friends, and the young man balances a table on his back while the tablecloth hides him from the view of all. The guests come in, and tea is put on the table. The poor young man under it is in a very uncomfortable position, and sends all the tea-things flying. The ladies shriek, and the men climb on chairs, for they think it is spirits, and Lucy seizes the opportunity to join him under the table. Papa Insteade lifts up the corner of the tablecloth, and reveals the two enjoying themselves. The pair are so obviously in love that he relents, and gives the necessary consent.

Psycho-seance / 2015

In the form of an anthology film on psychiatric subject, it offers reflection on various situations that occur in the waiting rooms and hospitals of a psychiatric institution. Time flows differently there, the boundaries between mental health and mental illness are shifting, frustrations are emerging, which puts doctors and patients even.

Seance / 2011

Based on a true story. After William Trigger’s finance dies in a car accident, his life begins to spiral downwards into loneliness and seclusion. Taking a friend’s advice, he attends a gathering, unaware that a seance is waiting for him on his arrival to try and contact the deceased. When he returns home things are not what they seem. Something or someone begins to haunt him. A frightening tale of one man’s decent into madness, the supernatural and the doors to the other side.
