Inghilterra, agli inizi del 1930, una sanguinosa guerra civile culmina con l'uccisione del re Enrico. Il suo successore Edoardo (marito della regina Elisabetta e padre di due maschietti e una bambina) ha due fratelli: Clarence e lo storpio Riccardo. Quest'ultimo ha messo a punto un piano per eliminare il re e i suoi legittimi eredi. Dopo avere eliminato Clarence, ne comunica la morte a Edoardo che, sconvolto per l'assassinio e già malato, muore d'infarto. Riccardo, che mira inizialmente alla reggenza e poi al trono, ha creato un piccolo gruppo di cospiratori (tra cui il Primo Ministro Hastings e lo spregevole duca di Buckingham) che gli consentono d'uccidere il conte Rivers, fratello d'Elisabetta e il giovane principe Enrico. Ora l'erede legittimo è il principe di Galles, che Riccardo fa venire a Londra insieme al fratellino. I due vengono relegati nella torre del castello e poi, su ordine di Riccardo, vengono strangolati dal suo sicario di fiducia, il terribile James Tyrell.
