Nel 1755, lo squattrinato capitano Ludvig Kahlen parte alla conquista delle aspre e desolate lande danesi con un obiettivo apparentemente impossibile: costruire una colonia in nome del Re. In cambio, riceverà per sé un titolo reale disperatamente desiderato. Ma l’unico sovrano della zona, lo spietato Frederik de Schinkel, ha la presuntuosa certezza che questa terra gli appartenga. Quando De Schinkel viene a sapere che la cameriera Ann Barbara e il marito servitore sono fuggiti per rifugiarsi da Kahlen, il privilegiato e perfido sovrano giura vendetta, facendo tutto ciò che è in suo potere per scoraggiare il capitano. Kahlen non si lascerà intimidire e ingaggerà una battaglia impari, rischiando non solo la sua vita, ma anche quella della famiglia di emarginati che si è venuta a formare intorno a lui.

Shot in Israel during the final days of the Yom Kippur War. Promised Lands is less straight documentary than visual collage. There are images of combat zones and soldiers, but also everyday street life, desert landscapes, funerals, supermarkets, the Wailing Wall. The soundtrack is snatches of radio, bursts of church bells and gunfire, and an extended voiceover from two politically opposed Israeli thinkers.

Settlers from infertile parts of Yugoslavia, arrive to rich Slavonia and Baranja. There they are faced with the decree of the Communist government by which they will be left without the land that they received in the process of collectivization just a year ago. The peasants fiercely resist the government's decision. Milisa Matic is a peasant who fights against the establishment of peasant cooperatives because in that case many peasants would lose their newly acquired land. The Communist government has decreed the founding of cooperatives and Markan Radisic is in charge of their establishment. When Markan's son proposes to Milisa's daughter, the two men confront each other. In self-defense Markan kills Milisa, however the national court fails to find mitigating circumstances. On the way to prison he listens to the news on radio about the abolition of agricultural cooperatives.
