Due giovani maghi apprendisti, Robert Angier e Alfred Borden, vengono istruiti e seguiti da Cutter, un ingegnere illusionista ed ex mago, ma durante un numero in cui una donna viene legata e messa in una cassa di vetro piena d'acqua, qualcosa va storto e Angier incolperà l'amico dell'accaduto, tentando di vendicarsi. Inizia così un crudele gioco tra i due uomini su chi sia il migliore e la rivalità si trasformerà pian piano in ossessione.

Topolino è un mago che si esibisce in un teatro, mentre Pippo si occupa di sipario e luci del palcoscenico. Topolino inizia lo spettacolo facendo apparire un tavolino e trasformando il proprio mantello in un corvo, ma viene deriso da Paperino che sta seguendo lo show da un posto d'onore sulla sinistra del palco. Il papero cerca poi di sabotare tutti i trucchi in cui si esibisce Topolino, ma ogni suo tentativo gli si ritorce contro (tra le altre cose, subisce un incantesimo che gli fa sputare carte da gioco). Alla fine Paperino si impossessa della pistola lanciarazzi di Topolino e gli spara, facendo crollare il soppalco su cui lavora Pippo.

Pregata da un'amica, Miss Marple si è trasferita temporaneamente nell'immensa villa vittoriana di Stonygates dove il proprietario, Lewis Serrocold, ha organizzato un istituto di rieducazione per giovani delinquenti. Sull'antico edificio regna un'atmosfera di mistero che culmina nell'assassinio di un ricco filantropo in visita. L'ispettore Curry, incaricato nelle indagini, non sa come muoversi in quello strano ambiente di bizzarri idealisti, psichiatri e minorati mentali, e di sicuro le sue indagini si risolverebbero in un fiasco se in suo aiuto non intervenisse proprio quella strana vecchietta . Sarà infatti proprio Miss Marple, alla quale é tornato in mente un gioco di prestigio, a risolvere l'intricato caso.
