Henri Roubier, un industriale edile tanto abile quanto disonesto, appena tornato in Francia da San Remo - dove è riuscito, Accordandosi con un collega italiano, a soffiare a tre concorrenti un grosso contratto per la costruzione di autostrade -, ospita sulla propria automobile un giovane campeggiatore e una bella automobilista, Lucienne, rimasta in panne. E' notte e durante una curva affrontata a velocità eccessiva, l'auto di Roubier esce di strada (corre sul fianco di un monte a picco sul mare) precipitando nel vuoto. Un enorme pino, abbarbicato alla roccia, interrompe la caduta dell'auto, che vi si posa sopra. Salvatisi in modo socì fortunoso, i tre - che non possono essere visti dalla strada, sotto il cui ciglio si trovano di un centinaio di metri - trascorrono giorni infelici, tra la fame e la sete, addolciti, per Lucienne e il giovane campeggiatore, da un sentimento di reciproco affetto.
