In "Water Over Glass," the tension of a mind adrift and in conflict with itself is captured and bookended visually by the vast mutability of sea and sky, where water and air surfaces suggest both static and the dissolution of the individual. A doppelganger, a crime scene and the tidal erasure of what might have taken place: discomfiting moments in a bright, almost psychedelic, arc. Assembled from 16mm, Super 8, and digital video, stop motion collage and digital compositing animation, "Water Over Glass" works backwards from an original story by Jason Zumpano and its musical articulation—Vancouver outfit The Cyrillic Typewriter’s 2018 album of the same name—to suspend a visual form over a sonic narrative.

Laura Rossellini, a widow from Rome, vacations on the Algarve coast one hot summer. One day while sunbathing, she finds a wounded man named Robert drifting in the surf on a rubber raft. She takes him home, and, after he is revived, learns his story. As they talk, their mutual attraction grows, until a group of armed men suddenly arrive looking for Robert.

On Land Over Water (Six Stories) / 1984

"In cinema one extracts the thought from the image; in literature the image from the thought" (Levinson). This reflection was the catalyst for the photographic and narrative strategies of "On Land Over Water." "On Land Over Water..." was born out of an image-notion of a skid mark on a highway, photographed in close-up, revealing texture and form. The image would be positioned with a voice-over narration, telling the story of a young boy witnessing a fatal auto accident and its ensuing aftermath. Over the following winter months I meditated on the cinematic potentials of that notion, "On Land Over Water..." is the product of working out variations of that meditation. In story discourse, "On Land..."experiments with the possibilities of adopting the characteristics of the short story to the forms of cinema. (RK)
