Orfeu is a popular composer from a samba school. He lives in the favela and falls madly in love when he meets Euridice, a newcomer to the neighborhood. But the local drug boss Lucinho stands between them and will drastically change both their lives.

A stop-motion re-imagining of the story about Orpheus and Eurydice from Greek mythology with a northern folk tale inspired style. Shot on 16mm with a Bolex and inspired by Czech puppetry, German expressionism, and body horror.

Orpheus and Eurydice / 1986

The opera-film, as opposed to Gluck's Vienna version, is a recollection of the ancient tragic Greek myth. Orpheus, who is able to defeat Hades with the power of art, is unable to conquer his own human defects. Amor is sympathetic to Orpheus' sufferings as he mourns his dead beloved, and lets him know the message sent by the Gods, namely that he may take her home from the underworld if he is capable of not looking at her.
