Rocco è un ragazzino di quattordici anni con una famiglia disastrata: il padre Saverio, pittore e poeta maledetto, è un genio incompreso incapace di affermarsi; la madre, bellissima e irrequieta, è fuggita negli Stati Uniti quando lui era piccolo; la matrigna è ostile e insensibile; la nonna vive in un mondo tutto suo e la sorellina sordomuta va già dall'analista a quattro anni. La sua vita nella periferia di Torino gli va stretta, non ha nessuno con cui parlare e vorrebbe un po' di stabilità e di calore umano, come i personaggi dei tanti libri che legge: una famiglia normale, qualcuno su cui contare. Per questo Rocco decide di fuggire di casa, sulle tracce della madre che l'ha abbandonato.
