MONOLOGUE / 2015

Three video works comprise the ‘MONOLOGUE Trilogy.’ MONOLOGUE, the first in the trilogy, is a moving exploration of Cambodia’s violent past and reflects on the nature of trauma. Vandy Rattana’s monologue is to the sister he has never met, and reveals his struggle coming to terms with the violence and loss experienced by his family and country. …far away, over there, the ocean is the last film of the trilogy to be produced (but arranged as the second to be viewed). It journeys with the character of a young painter who believes landscapes are but projected illusions of beauty and sensations produced by fragments of experiences in life. Funeral, the series’ third work, explores notions of history – both disclosed and occluded – as well as memory, amnesia and trauma. It dwells on Cambodia’s landscape – a terrain bearing the weight of lives lived, and buried, within its soil.

Thomas is a sound catcher, constantly hunting them. When his best friend betrays him by disappearing with Violet, his inspiring muse, Thomas looses a part of himself: the hearing from his left ear. A trauma that divides his new life in two.

Sivan Encü, a young Kurdish man, provided for his family by "smuggling" through the Turkish-Iraqi border. When he was murdered in the 2011 Robozik (Roboski) Massacre, the responsibility of family's welfare was taken over by his younger brother Sinan, who lost his life in an unfortunate accident. This is the story of their grief-stricken mother Heyam and her resilience. Alongside Heyam's struggle, the film brings the voices of Robozik elders and notables to the forefront, who have experienced first-hand the social, political and economic dimensions of smuggling, which has been the backbone of survival for the locals for many generations.

Peacock's Monologues / 2020

This short film tells the story of a meeting between two neighbours, in Ahuntsic and Villeray, around memories of Portugal; it is a story of two very different cities, Montreal and Lisbon; of an old man who has come to terms with death; of two strangers separated by an ocean but connected by the flight of a homing pigeon. Birds are the guides for this poetic meandering, exploring memories of the past and portents of the future. A dissonant score accompanies a split screen, completing the impression that we are confronted with a sensory puzzle, at once natural and urban, in which meditation takes its cues from fragments of reality. Matthew Wolkow’s film is a gentle ornithological, human and floral tale, suffused with both hope and the grim anxieties of our time. (Apolline Caron-Ottavi)

The New York City summer is fueled by the sultry emanations of hot air that tumble off the tongues of potential thespians as they attempt to decipher the gastric guesswork embedded in the prose of the pre-production process. The video camera flits across the boroughs of NYC in a splash-dash sojourn of sumptuous banquets and bohemian bombast, while the down-to-earth wisdom of the seeing impaired helps to guide the protagonist into detours of wisdom befitting his putrid project. A theatrical play incubates in the balding head of the videomaker and as its presence makes itself felt among the various victims of his vision, we share with them the horror of advancing age and the descriptive diatribes toward the destiny of the decrepit damned.

A Masque of Madness (Notes on Film 06-B, Monologue 02) / 2013

In this experimental film, British actor Boris Karloff (1887-1969) embodies over 170 characters, experiencing a schizophrenic horror trip in which he faces versions of himself in different masks, at different ages, of different genders and races. As Karloff’s career spans over 50 years, from the silent era to modern-day cinema, A Masque of Madness allows us to witness the aesthetic and technical developments of the medium in one single film.
