Madama Butterfly / 1986
Madama Butterfly è un'opera in tre atti (in origine due) di Giacomo Puccini, su libretto di Giuseppe Giacosa e Luigi Illica, definita nello spartito e nel libretto "tragedia giapponese" e dedicata alla regina d'Italia Elena di Montenegro. La prima rappresentazione ebbe luogo al Teatro alla Scala di Milano, il 17 febbraio 1904, della stagione di Carnevale e Quaresima.

La storia di Cio-Cio-San, detta Butterfly, una giovane geisha di Nagasaki che, abbandonata dal suo amante americano dopo aver dato alla luce il loro figlio, alla fine si uccide, continua a stupire il pubblico di oggi. In questa produzione straordinariamente autentica ed elegante dello Sferisterio Opera Festival, la musica altamente emotiva di Puccini è sapientemente trasmessa. Il cast superiore è capitanato da Raffaella Angeletti, "sicuramente una delle migliori Farfalle del nostro tempo" (ForumOpera.com), che ha interpretato questo ruolo in molti teatri italiani, oltre che a Madrid e alla Staatsoper di Vienna.

Japan, early twentieth century. U.S. Navy Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton inspects the house he has leased from a marriage broker. The broker, Goro, has procured him three servants and a geisha wife, Cio-Cio-San, known as Madama Butterfly. He is enchanted with the fragile Cio-Cio-San. Cio-Cio-San is heard in the distance joyously singing of her wedding. In a quiet moment, Cio-Cio-San shows her bridegroom her few earthly treasures and tells him of her intention to embrace his Christian faith. The Imperial Commissioner performs the wedding ceremony, and the guests toast the couple. The celebration is interrupted by Cio-Cio-San's uncle, a Buddhist priest, who bursts in, cursing the girl for having renounced her ancestors' religion. Alone with Cio-Cio-San in the moonlit garden, her husband dries her tears, and she joins him in singing of their love.

Raina Kabaivanska, though hardly passible as a teenager, shines in the title role. Her voice and acting are stunning. Nazzareno Antinori is also a solid Pinkerton with a pleasing voice, and Eleonora Jacovic is a wonderful Suzuki. To top things off the scenery is quite well done, and the staging is effective. I can't imagine any other filmed "Butterfly" being better than this one.
