Ferdinando è un timido insegnante fidanzato con Didì, una ragazza esuberante e civettuola mentre il suo amico Battista che è un intraprendente donnaiolo, è fidanzato alla gentile e romantica Marianna amica di Didì. Si tratta di due coppie male assortite e a Didì viene un'idea con il consenso dell'amica: se lei e l'amica si scambiassero i fidanzati, forse le cose andrebbero meglio. Ma Ferdinando è un galantuomo scrupoloso, che pur attratto dalla fanciulla, non vorrebbe mancare di lealtà verso il suo amico Battista e verso la propria fidanzata. Incerto tra Marianna e Didì, Ferdinando s'agita vanamente dando origine ad una serie di equivoci. Alla fine tutto s'accomoda: Marianna riuscirà a strappare al fidanzato una promessa di matrimonio; mentre Ferdinando si fidanzerà ufficialmente con Maria Rosa, una servetta che, segretamente innamorata del giovane, prenderà l'iniziativa e saprà persuaderlo che Didì non è fatta per lui. Didì, dal canto suo, cercherà altrove l'anima gemella.

Love's Surprises / 1909

A man, his wife and their two sons are having a meal. One of the sons leaves the room pretending to be ill and collects a bunch of flowers form a cupboard and goes out. The other son takes a bunch of flowers from under his bed and he too leaves, followed by their father, also carrying flowers. The two sons and their father call on the same young women one after the other; as each arrives, the previous suitor is hidden in a piece of furniture: the father under a chair cover, one son in a cupboard and the other in a piano. A girlfriend of the young woman visits and the two play pranks on the hiding men by playing the piano and sitting on the chair cover. The three men emerge and the father chases his two sons outside until they remind him of his own folly; he gives his sons some money and urges them to keep silent.

The documentary traces the story of changing social and religious attitudes to sex through a broad swathe of history. Starting with the place of ’sacred sex’ in the ancient world and ending with a discussion of the contemporary relationship between sex, marketing and prurience, the film offers some kind of map of how we got from there to here, and indicates that changes in sexual attitudes are connected with issues of power and control.
