The Stickleback's Eggs / 1925

An educational film, a movie through a microscope, in two parts. Within minutes after the egg drops in the water, fertilization occurs and contractions start. Soon, in a fertilized egg, we see the germinal disc divide into two blastomeres. Divisions continue; contractions re-occur at the cap as it covers the egg. Title cards in French tell us what to watch for. Muscular movements and circulation appear; the heart beats. In part two, we see blood circulation begin as red cells develop on the surface of the yoke. They mass toward the heart. Arteries form, blood flows. The egg hatches and blood flows to new areas.

The magician produces an egg, performing several sleight-of-hand tricks, and places it upon the table with the small end downward. He then crudely draws a human face upon the shell, and the egg immediately begins growing larger and larger until it reaches the size of a normal head.

Paperino è un ornitologo a caccia di un uovo di condor delle Ande. Riesce a trovarne uno, ma l'arrivo della madre lo costringe a nascondersi in un guscio rotto e poi a fingersi il suo piccolo appena nato. Presto Paperino viene vezzeggiato dalla mamma condor, scatenando la gelosia di suo "fratello", ovvero un altro pulcino (che era uscito dal guscio che Paperino aveva usato per nascondersi). Durante le prove di volo Paperino, con uno stratagemma, fa credere alla mamma condor di essere caduto in un laghetto ed essere annegato. In seguito cerca di portarsi a casa l'uovo, ma l'intervento di suo "fratello" lo fa finire di nuovo tra le braccia della mamma condor, che lo riporta al nido insieme al pulcino e all'uovo.

On Porky Pig's farm, Miss Prissy, a slow-witted hen, has never laid an egg. So, one of her fellow hens paints Prissy's name on an egg and places it in Prissy's nest. Prissy believes she laid the egg and proudly refuses to let Porky have it to give to a market's truck. Porky takes the egg from her and gives it to the driver of the truck. Prissy follows the truck to a nearby city, determined to regain her egg.

David Attenborough returns to the island of Madagascar on a very personal quest. In 1960 he visited the island to film one of his first ever wildlife series, Zoo Quest. Whilst he was there, he acquired a giant egg. It was the egg of an extinct bird known as the 'elephant bird' - the largest bird that ever lived. It has been one of his most treasured possessions ever since. Fifty years older, he now returns to the island to find out more about this amazing creature and to see how the island has changed. Could the elephant bird's fate provide lessons that may help protect Madagascar's remaining wildlife? Using Zoo Quest archive and specially shot location footage, this film follows David as he revisits scenes from his youth and meets people at the front line of wildlife protection. On his return, scientists at Oxford University are able to reveal for the first time how old David's egg actually is - and what that might tell us about the legendary elephant bird.
